Summary: We present a new and simple iterative equalization scheme for EDGE wireless systems. The new method improves the detection reliability through bi-directional processing on the DDF-SOVA equalizer. Relying on the mechanism of decision feedback in the DDF (delayed decision feedback) equalizer, bi-directional processing can be performed to exploit the time diversity of the received signal bursts for more reliable equalizer output. A special case of DFE-SISO (soft-input/soft-output) equalizer is also discussed. Simulation results show that, with modest increase in computational complexity, the bi-directional turbo equalizer can achieve significant performance gain over the single-directional turbo equalizer.
